Meta acqui-hires the co-founders of agentic AI startup Dreamer

Meta Platforms Inc. has made headlines again with its latest acqui-hire, bringing on board the co-founders and team members from Dreamer, an innovative startup focused on agentic artificial intelligence. Investors in Dreamer are set to receive more than their initial investment in the startup, according to sources familiar with the transaction. Despite the acquisition, Dreamer will continue to operate as a standalone legal entity. Meta will, however, gain a non-exclusive license to utilize Dreamer’s technology, ensuring that the startup retains some independence while contributing to Meta’s broader AI initiatives.

David Singleton, co-founder and Chief Executive of Dreamer, confirmed the acquisition through a post on X, expressing gratitude towards Wang for his support in building the company. Singleton highlighted a pivotal moment when he demonstrated Dreamer’s technology to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year. He noted that their shared vision for the future—empowering billions of people to create software that enhances their lives—was evident from the start.

Barra, who has experience with Google’s Android team and Xiaomi Corp., also led Meta’s virtual reality unit before leaving the company in 2021. The third co-founder, Nicholas Jitkoff, who serves as Chief Design Officer at Dreamer, previously contributed to the design of Google’s Chrome OS.

In November 2024, Dreamer successfully raised $56 million at a valuation of $500 million, indicating its strong potential within the AI landscape.
